details about pupillage.
Pupils will see a broad spread of work in each of Chambers’ three main areas: criminal, family and civil law. The first-six months is spent ‘shadowing’ tenants at court, undertaking written work and carrying out legal research. Towards the end of their first-six, pupils are encouraged to attend court with junior tenants and second-six pupils in order to increase their practical experience of everyday ‘bread-and-butter’ court work.
During their second-six pupils will be in court most days with their own cases. Chambers encourages its pupils to undertake work experience at Leicestershire CPS and also at Leicester Magistrates’ Court. Past pupils have found such experience invaluable. Those pupils wishing to undertake FRU cases will be allowed time in which to prepare briefs.
All applications for pupillage must be made directly to Chambers by way of an up-to-date curriculum vitae and covering letter, together with a stamped self-addressed envelope, addressed to Miss Tracey Paskins. Applicants must ensure that their curriculum vitae provide details of all academic grades from A-Level (or its equivalent) onwards. All applications are acknowledged and selection for interview is made in line with Chambers’ Equal Opportunities Policy.
Those candidates selected for interview will be required to perform written and oral exercises. In certain circumstances short-listed candidates will be invited to undertake an assessed mini-pupillage in Chambers.
The Pupillage Committee is committed to the fair selection of pupils. Chambers’ normal policy is to only interview those candidates with at least a 2:1 at degree level and Very Competent from the BVC. However, in exceptional circumstances applicants who do not meet such criteria may still be invited for interview.
A copy of Chambers’ current Pupillage Policy will be forwarded to any candidate if requested in writing together with an A4 stamped self-addressed envelope. Please address such requests to Mrs Kate Cawrey, clearly marked Pupillage Policy Request.
Pupils will be formally invited to apply for tenancy towards the end of Pupillage. Tenancy decisions generally take place no more than 4 weeks prior to the completion of Pupillage. The decision is taken by Chambers and each tenant has a vote.
The reality of life at the Bar is often very different to the popular image of the profession, and mini-pupillages are a good opportunity to see the difference for yourself.
Chambers offers one-week unfunded mini-pupillages. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and must sign a confidentiality agreement.
Chambers takes only one mini-pupil a week. Places are therefore limited and applications exceed availability. Priority will be given to those in their final year of their law degree/CPE/PGDL.
Chambers seeks to ensure that mini-pupils see a wide range of court- and paperwork with several members of Chambers. Mini-pupils stay predominantly in the Leicester courts and at Chambers but may be invited to travel on circuit.
Applications should be made by way of curriculum vitae and covering letter, together with a stamped self-addressed envelope. Please address applications to Miss Tracey Paskins. Applications should be made no later than January 31st of the year in which mini-pupillage is sought. Later applications will be considered according to availability.
Applications are considered in line with Chambers’ Equal Opportunities’ Policy.
Applications for third-six pupillages or tenancy should be made by way of curriculum vitae and covering letter and should be addressed to Mrs Nancy Hillier. Chambers is a friendly set conveniently located on the Midland circuit. All applications will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Chambers’ rent is levied as a percentage of receipts. The attractive premises are jointly owned by the tenants.
Applications from practitioners in all disciplines are welcomed.
